The floor is the most heavily worn surface in a home, and the choice depends largely on the room's moisture level. Choosing the wrong material for the wrong room leads to swelling and scratching within a few years.

Which floor suits which room?

In short:

  • Living room and bedroom: laminate or engineered wood — warm, economical, fast to install
  • Kitchen, bathroom, entrance: ceramic/porcelain — water and wear resistant
  • Solid hardwood: longest lasting but most expensive and demanding to maintain

Can laminate be installed over an existing floor?
If the existing floor is flat and sound (for example over ceramic), laminate can be laid with a suitable underlay. If the floor is uneven, levelling is needed first.
